Wayanad Heritage Museum

One of Kerala's largest archaeological museums, at Ambalavayal, with finds from the Neolithic era to the 16th century.

The Wayanad Heritage Museum at Ambalavayal, 12 km from Sultan Bathery, is one of the largest archaeological museums in Kerala. Its collection covers Wayanad's history from the Neolithic era to the 16th century.

It grew out of archaeological work in the 1980s around Edakkal and Sultan Bathery, with finds from places such as Muthanga, Nalluvayal and Edathara. The exhibits are arranged in four galleries:

Veerasmruthi shows hero stones (veerakkallu) from the 14th to 16th centuries, carved to remember warriors, battles and tiger hunts.
Gothrasmruthi covers tribal life, with tools, headgear, jewellery, cowbells and musical instruments of the Kurichiya and Paniya communities.
Devasmruthi holds terracotta figures, inscribed stones and about 20 stone idols from the 12th to 16th centuries.
Jeevanasmruthi shows hunting traps, ornaments and everyday objects that tell how Wayanad's tribes lived.

A multimedia theatre presents the region's history, and a botanical garden sits next to the museum. The District Tourism Promotion Council runs it.
