Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The northern part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, explored on guided jeep safaris through teak, rosewood and bamboo forest.

Tholpetty is the northern part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and lies within the UNESCO Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The forest is a mix of tropical woodland with teak, rosewood and bamboo.

Elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar deer and the Malabar giant squirrel live here. Birdwatchers look for hornbills, eagles and kingfishers, and the sanctuary also has king cobras, Indian rock pythons and the Malabar gliding frog, along with many butterflies.

The usual way in is a guided jeep safari. Guided treks and nature walks go deeper, past streams and small lakes. Local communities take part in running the eco-tourism programmes, which help protect endangered species and keep the forest in balance.
