Thirunelli Temple

An ancient Vishnu temple in the Brahmagiri hills, known as the Kashi of the South, beside the sacred Papanasini stream.

Thirunelli Temple stands in the Brahmagiri hills near Mananthavady and is dedicated to Vishnu. It is often called the Kashi of the South and is believed to be more than a thousand years old.

Legend says Brahma installed the idol of Vishnu here under an amla (nelli) tree, which gives the temple its name. The temple follows the traditional Kerala style, with granite pillars, carvings and a sloping tiled roof, and the deity is shown with four arms holding a conch, discus, mace and lotus.

The Papanasini stream nearby is held sacred, and families come here to perform Bali Tharpanam, rites for departed relatives. The road to the temple runs through forest and hills, and there are trekking routes in the area.

October to May is the most pleasant time to visit. Places to stay nearby range from budget rooms to guesthouses and resorts.
