Priyadarshini Tea Environs

A 500-acre cooperative tea estate near Mananthavady, set up in 1984 to resettle over 400 tribal families.

Priyadarshini Tea Environs is a 500-acre tea estate near Mananthavady, on the edge of the Brahmagiri forest. It was set up in 1984 as a cooperative society to resettle more than 400 tribal families, most of them from the Paniya community, and is described as the second-largest tribal resettlement project in Asia. The cooperative still runs the estate and employs the community.

Guided tours of the tea factory and museum explain each step of making tea, from withering and rolling to fermenting and drying, and end with a tasting.

Biswas Point, at 1,500 metres, looks out over the hills and valleys. Visitors can stay in tree houses or rooms on the estate and eat food cooked by the local community. There are trekking routes, nature trails, night camping, mountain biking and a swimming pool, and a recreation park with tribal murals and an amphitheatre. Handicrafts made by tribal artisans are on sale.
