Wildlife & forest in Wayanad

Pookode Lake

Kerala's highest freshwater lake at 770 metres, near Lakkidi, ringed by evergreen forest and covered in blue lotus.

Pookode Lake lies near Lakkidi at 770 metres above sea level, the highest freshwater lake in Kerala. It covers only about 5 hectares, which also makes it the smallest freshwater lake in the state, and it is said to be shaped like the map of India.

Evergreen forest surrounds the water, and blue lotus and water lilies grow on its surface. A small fish, Pethia pookodensis, is found here and nowhere else. The lake is the source of the Panamaram river, a tributary of the Kabini.

Visitors can hire pedal boats or kayaks and walk the forest paths around the shore. There is also a freshwater aquarium run by the Fisheries Department, a children's park and a shop selling bamboo and coconut-husk crafts and local spices. The South Wayanad Forest Division manages the site, and buses stop close by.
