A dirt trail climbing grassy slopes towards Chembra Peak

Hill station in Wayanad

Chembra Peak

Wayanad's highest peak at 2,100 metres, a guided trek from Meppadi past a heart-shaped lake.

At 2,100 metres (6,890 feet), Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek starts at Meppadi and takes about three to four hours; it is moderately hard, and the Forest Department issues permits and provides guides.

The trail climbs through tea estates, evergreen forest and open grassland, often in cloud. About halfway up is Hridaya Saras, a heart-shaped lake that is said never to dry up, even in summer. It is the usual resting point and the most photographed spot on the mountain.

Tea covers the lower slopes, with grassland and montane forest higher up. The peak has rare orchids and medicinal plants, and elephants, deer and monkeys live in the area. Birdwatchers look for the Malabar whistling thrush and the white-bellied treepie.

Visitor numbers are controlled through permits and guides to protect the fragile grassland. Carry your waste back down.
